Client Overview

The Linked Immunization Action Network (Linked) facilitates collaboration among practitioners, policymakers, and partners from middle-income countries. Funded by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, its mission is to identify shared challenges within immunization programs and promote innovative solutions that enhance resilience, equity, and sustainability.

The challenge

The Linked Immunisation Action Network primarily serves health providers and policymakers in middle-income member countries, where internet access can be unreliable. Performance and usability were crucial to supporting these practitioners effectively.

With a fixed budget from grant funding, Linked joined our long-term support program. We offered a phased approach, making targeted design and development improvements each month to stay within their budget and avoid overages.

The solution

We focused on improving two high-traffic areas: the Home page and the Tools and Resources section, to enhance performance for practitioners.

Performance tests showed that the home page was slow due to the carousel at the top. To improve the LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) score, we made the following changes:

  • Replaced the JS-based carousel with the optimized SlickJS, reducing JavaScript calls.
  • Removed reCaptcha and its forms, eliminating the need to load reCaptcha functionality on each page.
  • Uninstalled two plugins, reCaptcha4WP and Contact Form 7, which were slowing the site.

We then redesigned the Tools and Resources section to improve navigation and user experience, including:

  • Streamlined content pathways for faster access
  • Added filters and improved search functionality
  • Enhanced visual design for greater engagement

We also removed an underused online forum, replacing it with more useful static resources.

The process

A Faster Carousel

Embracing the ‘less is more’ approach, we removed reCaptcha and its associated forms and plugins, while optimizing JavaScript calls to improve load times.

Filters and Search Functionality

New filters, tags, and search functionality make it faster for visitors to find the information they need quickly.

The result

The metrics speak for themselves. After performance testing, we saw significant improvements:

  • Desktop: +4 points on average
  • Mobile: +13 points on average, which is especially crucial for practitioners in the field with weaker signals.

An added bonus? The site’s accessibility also improved. This project proves that smaller, strategic improvements can lead to major results, even on a tight budget.
