The challenge

The previous site was cluttered and confusing. Users struggled to find information due to complicated pathways, excessive content, and overwhelming navigation. Most importantly, the organization’s mission was unclear. On the backend, the site ran on an outdated version of Drupal, making updates difficult for administrators and requiring an upgrade.

Through our support program, we used an iterative process to address the issues and prioritized needs to maximize impact quickly.

Heatmaps

Heatmaps conducted during our initial research and discovery phase revealed potential friction points in the user journey, which informed how we streamlined the design and content.

The solution

The biggest fix was navigation. Using Google Analytics and Mouseflow, we identified what users clicked on and visited most, guiding the placement of top links. We replaced the overwhelming mega-menu with six main items and moved others to a hamburger menu.

Colorado Health also audited their content, reducing pages by 70%. They streamlined priority areas like Economic Opportunity and Affordable Housing down to just 10, making it easier for users to explore. We paired the new content with redesigned cards for clearer pathways and less scrolling.

To better display their accountability to users, we also built a data display that can be easily updated with new data. Additional improvements included:

  • Removing large hero images
  • Adding accordions to collapse text
  • Updating event taxonomy
  • Redesigning the search page
  • Implementing translation support
  • Ensuring consistent layout for basic pages.

Finally, we placed their mission front and center, making it unmistakably clear who Colorado Health serves and why their work matters.
