Roosevelt University
Using open source to create a sustainable website.
Client Overview
Roosevelt is a metropolitan university that is an active partner in the social, economic, and cultural development of the communities it serves. It offers a broad array of academic programs, from associate degrees to doctoral degrees, in a highly interactive environment where students can explore, discover, and develop their unique abilities and interests.

The challenge
Roosevelt’s old website was built on a proprietary CMS that was heavily reliant on time-consuming hands-on updates, which created a lot of additional costs. Moving to an open source site would help alleviate these issues as well as give them more flexibility.
The process
Custom Drupal Development
Roosevelt provided Kanopi with a blueprint and updated theme; setting the vision and general direction for their new website. Kanopi used this as the foundation of our Development work, making adjustments to compensate for best practices and Roosevelt’s evolving needs.
SSO Integration
Many higher ed institutions have third-party systems for managing student, faculty, and staff accounts, and Roosevelt is no different. Kanopi built a single sign-on solution so that users can log in to the new Drupal site with their existing credentials, and have their information automatically synced with a third-party platform.
The solution
Working with existing designs, Kanopi used a website blueprint to inform our decisions and create a development and build plan to move Roosevelt from their outdated proprietary system onto Drupal.
Key features
SSO Integration
The integrated SSO allows users to log in automatically with their QuickLaunch account. This integration includes syncing users: creating or updating their Drupal account and roles using the info coming from QuickLaunch.
The Migrate Module
We used the Migrate module to dynamically create thousands of Media items from the original website’s file repository.
Theme-building
An updated theme was built using PatternLab and Layout Builder.
The result
By migrating the designs and code into open source, Roosevelt’s new site allows for easier future iterations as they grow, as well as being easier to update for content editors.
